ShopRite | Glasgow, DE

700 Plaza Drive

Welcome to the Four Seasons ShopRite!

Hopefully you aren't sick of ShopRite yet, because we have one more to visit! We'll be spending the next few weeks around the Delaware-Maryland border, starting with this ShopRite. The store first opened as a SuperFresh in 2001, anchoring the Four Seasons Plaza. SuperFresh closed in late 2007, and owner A&P reopened it under a different banner, Pathmark, on March 27, 2009. You can view a Flickr album from Pathmark themselves with photos of the store shortly after opening by clicking here. Pathmark wasn't a big hit, and closed in 2012. The Kenny family, which owns all ShopRites in Delaware, took the store under their reign and reopened it on August 24, 2013. They've been the most successful in this location, and obviously the store is still open today. So, let's see what it looks like!

The floral shoppe is just to your right when you enter this store. The decor here is the same as Brandywine Commons, and I believe is included in all Delaware ShopRites. On the other hand, the layout is basically identical to the Millville and Vineland stores, both of which are in New Jersey. I was surprised to see that, as I would've thought they would've kept the SuperFresh/Pathmark layout.

Prepared foods and the salad bar are across from floral, and cafe seating is tucked into the corner.

The produce department is on the other side of the grand aisle. I took a very similar photo in Vineland.

The deli, bakery, and seafood counters complete the grand aisle.

The meat department is in the back of the store, as is common with most supermarkets. I wonder how many stores have meats in a different part of the store.

A look down aisle 16, which has various household products. The aisles in this store are very clean and streamlined.

Dairy and frozen foods are in the last few aisles. The vertical TV hanging above the aisle is pretty interesting.

A look at the front of the store, with checkouts and customer service.

I've always liked this design of SuperFresh, though my favorite is this one. Also, that "cafe" sign to the left looks weirdly old, even though it must have been added by ShopRite. Pathmark definitely didn't have a cafe, and SuperFresh probably did, but the signage would've been more like this.

2.1 miles away: Safeway of Glasgow

This will be the store we take a look at next week. It opened as a Genuardi's in the late '90s, relocating from an older store in the shopping center, being renamed to Safeway in 2004 along with the other Delaware Genuardi's stores after Safeway acquired them three years earlier. After the closure of the Wilmington Safeway in 2018, this is the only one remaining in the greater Philadelphia area.

4.6 miles away: Food Lion of Elkton

We'll be crossing the border into Maryland for the first time with this store. It opened in 1999 as the anchor of a small shopping center, a setup not unlike what you would probably find in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina.

This was quite a nice store! The decor, layout, and selection were all good. The store wasn't unnavigably crowded, but it seemed to be doing good business. Thanks for joining me, and I'll see you next week at Safeway! The Retail Connection: Check out happy.

ShopRite | Clementon, NJ

1224 Blackwood-Clementon Road

Welcome to the Laurel Hill ShopRite!

From one Zallie's ShopRite to another. Last week's store is only located about two miles away, but feels worlds different. It originally opened in 1974 and has had several different tenants and remodels over the years. ShopRite didn't come along until 2007, and operates quite a modern store there today. The same cannot be said about this location, the ShopRite of Laurel Hill. It opened in 1973 as a Shop 'N Bag, being the first Zallie's supermarket, and became ShopRite in 1980. Sure, the sign on the exterior has the current ShopRite logo (though it didn't until 2018 - and, as we'll see, not all of the exterior signage has been updated), but that's it. The inside is still totally '80s. Not for long, though, as work is already ongoing to convert the former Clementon Kmart down the road into a new, state-of-the-art Zallie's ShopRite, not unlike the one we saw last year in Woolwich42Freeway has a lot of great information about the ShopRite situation here in Clementon, so please check out that article! But, for now, let's enjoy the current Laurel Hill ShopRite for what it is: a snapshot of the '80s.

The European breads section and the bakery are on your right when you walk in. I'm kind of confused by the decor here, because it's decidedly not modern or recent, but it looks newer than everything else in the store. I think it could be an upgrade from some point in the '90s.

And across from the deli, you find the deli department and the prepared foods kitchen (or "food court"), both of which are incredibly retro. I don't know what's more '80s-looking: the all-lowercase "delicatessen" or the urgent "THE FOOD COURT". I love the italics and the bright neon.

The produce department is in the back of the grand aisle. The second half of the "fresh produce" sign is burned out, but the ceiling makes up for that.

The seafood counter and the meat department are in the back.

Kind of an odd setup here. You can either go straight and through the meat department, or go to the left and go down the aisles. We'll do the latter. Both paths end up at the dairy department on the right wall.

A look at aisle 10, international foods. I like the old-school look of most of this store, but the aisle markers are pretty ugly. So are the category markers, although those are newer based on the logo and slogan.

Dairy's in the last aisle.

Checkouts are in the front. The checkout lanes themselves seem like they could be new, but the lane lights probably date back to when the store opened.

Also along the front end are the pharmacy, floral, and the customer service counter, all with glorious neon. The mirror treatment in the floral section was a common feature of ShopRites of the '80s.

As we leave the store, here's the ShopRite sign on the right side of the store. This logo was phased out in 2002.

As you can see on the far right side of the photo, the old ShopRite Pharmacy logo is still up on the road sign. If you're wondering why the sky looked like this, it was because of the smoke from the Canadian wildfires last year. I have asthma and I could barely go outside during that time because of how bad the air quality was.

2013

Still sporting the old logo on the facade here.

Thank you for joining me on this tour! I enjoyed seeing this ShopRite and comparing it to the one we saw last week. Despite being owned by the same family, the two stores couldn't be more different in terms of layout and aesthetics. Knowing how the Zallie's ShopRite in Woolwich turned out, the new location in Clementon is going to be great. I believe there are plans for this store to become a storage facility of some kind after ShopRite is all moved out, but I don't believe that's 100% confirmed as of now. Thanks again for coming with me, and I'll see you again next week!

ShopRite | Laurel Springs, NJ

1200 Chews Landing Road

Welcome to the Chews Landing ShopRite!

Welcome back to the Garden State! Today, we're going to be touring a store with a very New Jersey history. The first supermarket to operate in this location was Shop 'n Mart, which opened the store on October 29, 1974. I'm not familiar with Shop 'n Mart, but it seems like they were a small local chain (other locations in Cherry Hill and Voorhees opened on the same day). In 1978, Shop 'n Mart merged with Thriftway, and this store operated under that name until the mid '90s. Super G opened a store in the space on July 10, 1996. The store was converted to a Stop & Shop in September 2005, and was then bought by ShopRite along with most of the other Stop & Shop stores in South Jersey in September 2007. Today, the store is run by the Zallie family. Let's go shopping!

Quite an interesting welcome sign on a baked goods display. The in-store bakery is all the way in the back of the store, as we'll see later.

Produce and floral are on the front wall. This store has a really odd layout, with no grand aisle. I believe the layout is left over from Super G.

Dairy is on the right wall. I like the decor here. I don't know how common it is among Zallie's stores, as I've only been to one other - Woolwich, which has their current decor.

Deli and bakery are in the back. This ShopRite serves Boar's Head in addition to the chain's competing brand, Black Bear of the Black Forest.

Snacks and other promotional items are in aisle 13.

A small cafe in the back of the store, with a very tiny seating area. This is probably the strangest part of the layout in my opinion, as I've pretty much only seen cafes in the front of the store.

The pharmacy is up next. I was here on a Sunday, and they're only open until 3:00 on weekends.

The quality meats are next to the pharmacy. This store must not have a service meat department.

It does, however, have a strangely prominent seafood department.

Frozen foods are on the left side of the store. Having frozen foods and dairy on opposite sides of the building is definitely a choice.

We're checking out of the store now. I've definitely never seen self-checkouts numbered up to 90. There definitely weren't 90 registers, so I don't know where that number comes from.

The trees look much prettier here, but the store itself is pretty much the same.

Thank you for joining me on this tour! This was a pretty nice store. It's a good size and the decor is awesome, but the layout is really bad. It would be nice if the next remodel comes with a new layout, but it's probably going to be a while before this store gets a makeover. Zallie's has their hands full in this area right now, as they're working on a new location about two miles south in the former Clementon Kmart. That store is going to replace the current (and very outdated) Clementon location, which we'll be touring next week! See you then! The Retail Connection: Check out happy.

ShopRite | Vineland, NJ

1255 W. Landis Ave

Welcome to the Delsea ShopRite!

It's been a month since we've been in South Jersey! The last time was back on July 12 when we visited the Marmora ShopRite and, in true New Jersey fashion, we'll be seeing another ShopRite today. The Delsea ShopRite is one of two in Vineland, the other being further down Landis Avenue. That store opened back in the late '70s, while this one opened in 2013. It replaced an older and much more hidden store about a half a mile northeast that opened in 1986. This store is owned by the Bottino family, who also own the Millville location. I just threw a lot of links at you; let's go inside now!

A few stores-within-a-store in the lobby here: Great Clips and RiteCare on the right side, and ShopRite Wines & Spirits on the left. The RiteCare clinic was also a feature of the previous Delsea ShopRite (which, by the way, is now a storage facility; it was unlikely to become another supermarket due to its hidden location).

Now we enter the actual supermarket, with the floral department to the right.

Mrs. B's Homemade Kitchen Secrets and The Wok at the ShopRite are across from floral, with cafe seating in the front corner. This store has the exact same layout as the Millville Bottino's ShopRite, though with much gaudier decor. It doesn't look too bad, but I'd say it was dated when it was installed in 2013.

The gourmet delicatessen is serving Boar's Head.

Across from the delicatessen is the produce market. I actually do quite enjoy the decor as it looks here.

The expansive bakery department affixes the corner of the grand aisle. This store seems to have more references to Bottino's than the Millville store does.

The store also has a nice seafood department, serving the catch of the day. I really like the  tiled flooring in this part of the store.

The cheese bar is in the back of the produce department. Millville also has this feature, but it's larger.

A butcher shop and various meat selections along the back wall. The 2000s ShopRite slogan "Always Fresh, Always for Less" is incorporated into this store. Another ShopRite slogan is on the front wall.

This picture isn't showing anything in particular, but I wanted to include it to show just how large the back actionway is. In many stores, it would be half the size of this. This store is quite large.

A look at the double-wide aisle 8. While this store and Millville share a lot of similarities, these aisle markers (other than the general layout) are the only thing that's exactly the same.

Dairy and frozen are in the last few aisles of the store, where windows let a lot of natural light in.

Another funky tile pattern and a "This is your neighborhood, this is your ShopRite" sign as we head towards the exit doors.

Customer service is in the front of the store.

Normally, in a ShopRite, the pharmacy would be along the front wall, but, due to the wine and spirits section in this store, it instead divides the produce section from the aisles.

While the inside of this store is quite nice, I'm not a huge fan of the look of the outside. I don't really love the stone used around the entrance.

0.4 miles away: Lidl of Vineland

Next week, we'll be taking a look at this store, which is located right next to the ShopRite and is visible from the parking lot, though you can't get from one store to the other without getting back on Landis Avenue. This store opened on November 16, 2017 as the Philadelphia area's first Lidl.

0.4 miles away: Walmart Supercenter of Vineland

This Walmart Supercenter is located directly across the street from ShopRite. It opened on January 20, 2009. This property originally held a Two Guys, which opened on June 15, 1966 and closed in December 1981, later becoming a Jamesway before closing in 1995. It was demolished in 2007 for the Walmart.

Thank you for reading this post! I quite enjoyed this store. While I think the decor is a little over-the-top in some places, it's still a really nice store and definitely one I would want to come back to and shop at again. Next week, we aren't going far - only next door to the Lidl! See you there! The Retail Connection: Check out happy.
